CV

Xingyun Shen is currently completing a MA in Critical Fashion Practices at ArtEZ University of the Arts. Her thesis project examines the end-of-life of garments and its wearers, by looking at the mnemonic dimensions of a garment after the wearer’s present life.

These artistic processes are grounded in Xingyun’s pursuit for intimacy and closeness of bodies and spaces. Her practice challenges stately and institutional presuppositions and methodologies; seeking, documenting and digging up fissures and gaps grounded in the ordinary.

Together with her friends, she founded Clothes Press, a small distribution and publishing platform that connects fashion writers and practitioners to places. Xingyun has a background in working and researching in and around the secondhand fashion industry in Singapore, before moving to the Netherlands in 2023.

Xingyun’s fascination for memory-making and holding spaces extend into the books we read, where she sees the margins of pages as an alternative spatial dimension for readers to meet. This led her to host Marginalia Book Club, a book club interested in multiple truths of a reader rooted in Subjectivity; and a permeable space curious about how we read what we read, paying attention to the habits, annotation methods we adopt in reading.
